Perfect Match

Photo Story / 2023 — 2024

In Hangzhou, China, the “Xiangqin” (Blind Date) phenomenon unfolds at Wansong Academy, a centuries-old institution turned matchmaking hub. Remarkably, it’s not the singles but their parents who participate, clutching papers with vital statistics and ideal partner expectations. Strikingly, photos are conspicuously absent. Originally an educational centre, Wansong Academy transitioned into hosting these events in 2005, inspired by romantic tales like Romeo and Juliet. The scene comprises devoted parents, a few young attendees, matchmakers, intermediaries, and visitors searching on behalf of their parents. This offline approach to dating arises from concerns about online scams and exploitation. However, critics argue that it commodifies individuals, emphasising materialistic values over compatibility and true love while perpetuating traditional gender roles.
